스코틀랜드 출신의 호주 유명 포크송 가수이자 작사 작곡가인 에릭 보글(Erig Bogle). 그가 1971년 만든 이 노래는 오늘날 호주인들의 ‘30대 유명 노래’ 중 하나로 선정되어 있다.
갈리폴리 반도 참전 상이군인의 회한
‘나 태어난 이 강산에 군인이 되어 / 꽃 피고 눈 내리기 어언 삼십년 / 무엇을 하였느냐 무엇을 바라느냐 / 나 죽어 이 흙 속에 묻히면 그만이지 / 아 다시 못 올 흘러간 내 청춘 / 푸른 옷에 실려 간 꽃다운 이내 청춘...’
언더그라운드 가수이자 민중가수로 알려진 김민기씨가 군 복무 시절, 평생 선임하사관(상사)로 복무했던 상사의 조촐한 전역 송별식 술자리에 참석했다가 선물로 주려고 작사 작곡했다는 ‘늙은 군인의 노래’ 첫 부분이다. 이 노래는 이후 80년대 한국 대학생들이 운동가요로 가사만 바꾸어 부름으로서 더욱 유명해지기도 했다.
평생은 선임하사관으로, 직업 군인으로 살았던 한 군인의 회한과 그럼에도 국가를 생각하는 신념이 고스란히 담겨 있는 가사로 비단 80년대 젊은이들뿐 아니라 대중들의 사랑을 받았던 노래이기도 하다.
이와 직접적으로 비교하기는 무리가 있지만, 제1차 세계대전 당시 안작 부대원으로 참전했던 한 병사를 그린 호주의 유명한 노래가 있다. 바로 ‘And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda’라는 노래로, 안작 데이의 의미와 호주 참전군인들의 국가 사랑, 요즘 젊은 세대의 무관심을 빗댄 이 노래는 호주인들이 좋아하는 호주의 30대 노래 중 하나이기도 하다.
이 노래는 1971년 스코틀랜드 출신의 호주 포크송 가수이자 작곡가인 에릭 보글(Eric Bogle)이 직접 가사를 쓰고 곡을 붙인 노래이다. 제1차 세계대전 중 안작 부대원으로 갈리폴리 전투에 참전했다가 불구가 된 한 젊은이의 이야기를 통해 당시 전투의 처참한 상황을 묘사하면서 전쟁 전, 호주 초원과 아웃백을 자유롭게 오가며 살던(Waltzing Matilda) 그 시절로 다시는 돌아갈 수 없는 회한을 담고 있다. 노래 끝 부분에 ‘Waltzing Matilda’ 가사 일부를 덧붙인 것은 그 상황을 극대화하기 위한 것으로 보인다.
이 노래는 지난 2001년 호주 작곡가협회(Australian Performing Right Association. APRA) 창립 75주년 기념행사에서 호주인들이 즐기는 30대 노래 중 하나로 선정되기도 했다.
보글은 애초 이 노랫말을 8절로 만들었으나 너무 길 느낌이 있어 5절로 줄였다고 알려져 있다. 1974년 브리즈번(Brisbane)에서 열린 포크송 페스티벌에서 에릭 보글은 이 노래를 선보여 사람들로부터 극찬을 받았다. 당시 그가 출품한 노래가 두 곡이라서 이 노래는 입상에 들지 못했는데, 이 노래에 감동을 받은 이들이 입상하지 못한 점에 더 놀랐다는 이야기도 있다.
당시 페스티벌에는 다윈(Darwin) 지역에 있는 채널 제도(Channel Islands)에서 온 제인 허리벌(Jane Herivel)이라는 여성이 있었는데, 에릭 보글의 이 노래에 감명을 받은 그녀는 보글에게 이 노래 악보를 요청, 영국 남부의 한 페스티벌에서 이 노래를 불렀고 후에 이를 레코드로 만들었다. 그런 후 원 작사 작곡자인 에릭 보글도 모르는 사이 이 노래는 영국은 물론 미국에서도 크게 알려지게 됐다. 1976년 영국을 방문했던 에릭 보글은 자신의 노래가 이곳에서 유명한 것을 알고는 크게 놀랐으며, 지역 축제에서 이 노래를 불러달라는 요청을 받기도 했다.
‘And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda’의 가사는 다음과 같다.
When I was a young man I carried me pack
And I lived the free life of the rover
From the Murray's green basin to the dusty outback
I waltzed my Matilda all over
Then in 1915 my country said: Son,
It's time to stop rambling, there's work to be done

And for ten weary weeks I kept myself alive
While around me the corpses piled higher
Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over head
And when I awoke in me hospital bed
And saw what it had done, I wished I was dead
I never knew there was worse things than dying

All around the green bush far and near
For to hump tent and pegs, a man needs both legs
No more waltzing Matilda for me
They collected the wounded, the crippled, the maimed
And they shipped us back home to Australia
The armless, the legless, the blind and the insane
Those proud wounded heroes of Suvla
And when the ship pulled into Circular Quay
I looked at the place where me legs used to be
And thank Christ there was no one there waiting for me
To grieve and to mourn and to pity
