이세돌과 알파고 대결 다큐영화 관심

제16회 트라이베카 영화제(Tribeca Film Festival)가 19일 라디오시티 뮤직홀에서 오프닝 나잇 상영작 Chris Perkel의 다큐멘터리 ‘Clive Davis’를 시작으로 12일간의 일정에 들어간다.

 

매년 봄 뉴욕에서 열리는 트라이베카 영화제는 2001년 9.11테러사건 이후 침체된 뉴욕의 부흥(復興)을 기원하며 2002년 제인 로즌솔, 로버트 드 니로, 크레이그 햇코프에 의해 시작되었다. 영화명칭처럼 맨하탄 로워다운타운의 트라이베카(Triangle Below Canal street) 지역을 중심으로 영화가 동시다발적(同時多發的)으로 상영된다.

 

국제장편경쟁, 단편경쟁, 스포트라이트 다큐멘터리를 포함 총 13개 부문에서 100여편이 넘는 영화들이 경쟁하게 된다. 특히 올해는 딥마인드사가 제작한 러닝타임 90분의 다큐영화 'Alphago(알파고)'가 선보일 예정이어서 관심을 끈다.

 

컴퓨터 인공지능(AI)과 인간 이세돌과 치른 세기의 바둑대결을 다룬 것으로 구글의 자회사이자 알파고란 이름을 탄생시킨 딥마인드가 직접 제작한 점 역시 주목을 받고 있다.

 

 

 

 

뉴욕에 거주하는 많은 셀럽(유명인사)들이 일부러 찾는다는 트라이베카 영화제는 일반인들에게 공개되는 퍼블릭 상영과 기자들을 위한 P&I(Press&Industry) 상영으로 나뉘며 레드카펫, 인터뷰, 스페셜 이벤트 등 다양한 부대서비스로 영화제를 찾는 관객들의 기대감을 높이고 있다.

 

특히 이 영화제에서는 기존의 틀을 뛰어넘어 혁신적이고 창의적인 영향력을 발휘한 개인이나 단체에게 '파괴적 혁신상'을 수여하는데 2013년 가수 싸이의 수상으로 한국 관객들에게는 더욱 친숙한 영화제이기도 하다.

 

공식 영화제 전 이미 다양한 스크리닝을 통해 관계자들과 소통하고 있고 지난 14일엔 기자와 칼럼니스트, 작가들에게 배지를 베이스 50 Varick St.에서 배부하면서 영화축제의 분위기를 달궈 왔다.

 

매년 봄 뉴요커들을 찾는 이번 영화제에 개인적으로 '뉴스로'의 칼럼니스트로서 취재도 겸하게 되어 흥분을 감출 수가 없다. 개인적으로 첫 참여지만 다양성을 강조하는 개성 강한 영화제인만큼 현장 소식을 뉴스로 독자에게 전할 예정이다.

The Tribeca Film Festival was founded in 2002 by Jane Rosenthal, Robert De Niro and Craig Hatkoff, reportedly in response to the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the consequent loss of vitality in the Tribeca neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, although there are reports that its founding was underway prior to the events of 9/11.

 

The mission of the festival is "to enable the international film community and the general public to experience the power of film by redefining the film festival experience." The Tribeca Film Festival was founded to celebrate New York City as a major filmmaking center and to contribute to the long-term recovery of lower Manhattan.

 

In 2006 and 2007, the Festival received over 8600 film submissions and held 1,500 screenings. The Festival's program line-up includes a variety of independent films including documentaries, narrative features and shorts, as well as a program of family-friendly films. The Festival also features panel discussions with personalities in the entertainment world and a music lounge produced with ASCAP to showcase artists. One of the more distinctive components of the Festival is its Artists Awards program in which emerging and renowned artists celebrate filmmakers by providing original works of art that are given to the filmmakers' competition winners. Past artists of the Artists Awards program have included Chuck Close, Alex Katz, and Julian Schnabel.
