뉴욕의 케빈 김 변호사가 한인으로는 처음 뉴욕시립대(CUNY) 이사로 임명됐다.
앤드류 쿠오모 뉴욕주지사는 김 변호사를 CUNY 이사회의 새로운 멤버로 임명했다고 28일 밝혔다. 한인이 CUNY 이사로 임명된 것은 김 변호사가 처음이고 아시안으로는 세번째다. 이사의 임기는 7년이며 재임명될 수 있다.
뉴욕시립대는 4년제 종합대학과 대학원, 커뮤니티칼리지, 법대와 의대 등 24개 교육기관으로 이뤄진 뉴욕시 최대의 대학이다. 뉴욕주립대(SUNY) 캘리포니아 주립대(CSU)에 이어 미국에서 세 번째로 큰 규모로 총 27만명의 학생이 재학중이다.
CUNY 이사는 총장 선출 등 운영 전반에 주요 결정권을 가진 조직으로 위원장을 포함해 현재 16명으로 구성돼 있다. 현재 위원장은 지난해 쿠오모 주지사에 의해 임명된 윌리엄 톰슨 전 뉴욕시 감사원장이다.
1970년 서울에서 태어난 김 변호사는 퀸즈 타운젠드해리스 고교를 마치고 스탠퍼드 대학에 진학해 동아시아학 학사와 사회학 석사를 받았으며, 1999년 컬럼비아 로스쿨을 졸업했다.
2009년 뉴욕시의원(19지구) 후보로 나와 예비선거에서 승리했으나 본선거에서 상대 캠프의 인종차별적 마타도어에 분루를 삼킨 바 있다. 김 변호사는 이후 앤드류 쿠오모 뉴욕주지사 민주당 후보 선대본부에서 활동했으며 지난 2014~2016년 아시안 최초로 뉴욕주 주류국장을 역임하기도 했다.
김 변호사는 현지 언론과의 인터뷰에서 “고등학교까지 뉴욕시 공립학교를 다닌 내가 CUNY 이사에 임명된 것은 가슴 벅찬 일이다. 세계 최고 수준급의 뉴욕시립대에 더욱 많은 학생들이 지원할 수 있도록 길을 열어주는 역할을 하고 싶다”고 포부를 밝혔다.

The City University of New York (CUNY) is the public university system of New York City, and the largest urban university in the United States. CUNY and the State University of New York (SUNY) are separate and independent university systems, despite both public institutions receiving funding from New York State. CUNY, however, is additionally funded by the City of New York.
CUNY is the third-largest university system in the United States, in terms of enrollment, behind the State University of New York (SUNY), and the California State University system. More than 270,000-degree-credit student(s) and 273,000 continuing and professional education students are enrolled at campuses located in all five New York City boroughs.
The university has one of the most diverse student bodies in the United States, with students hailing from 208 countries. The black, white and Hispanic undergraduate populations each comprise more than a quarter of the student body, and Asian undergraduates make up 18 percent. Fifty-eight percent are female, and 28 percent are 25 or older.
