해외 최초로 위안부소녀상(평화의 소녀상)을 건립한 가주한미포럼이 미국의 교사들이 ‘위안부’ 역사에 대해 가르칠 수 있도록, 수업지도안과 보충자료, 비디오 영상, 국제기구 자료, 역사적 기록물 등을 한 곳에 모은 웹사이트를 제작해 관심을 모은다.

 

컴포트위민에듀케이션‘(www.ComfortWomenEducation.org) 이라는 제목의 웹사이트는 미국인들에겐 여전히 생소하고 어려운 ‘위안부’ 문제를 우선 교사들이 쉽게 이해하고 학생들에게 체계적으로 가르칠 수 있도록 설계된 수업지도안이라는 점에서 특기할만 하다.

 

사이트를 클릭하면 2007년 미하원에서 역사적인 위안부결의안이 통과될 때 청문회에 나온 이용수 할머니와 통역으로 활약한 김현정 가주한미포럼 대표의 모습과 2013년 캘리포니아 글렌데일에 건립된 해외 최초의 평화의 소녀상, 그리고 2017년 미 대도시로는 처음 세워진 한-중-필리핀 소녀상 등 사진 세장이 연속으로 나온다.

 

 

 

 

지난 2016년, 캘리포니아 교육부를 상대로 '위안부' 역사를 캘리포니아 교육과정에 포함시키는 교과서 캠페인을 주도한 가주한미포럼의 김현정 대표는 “수업지도안은 예제(例題)를 중심으로 다양한 그룹활동을 제시하여, 현재도 계속되는 여성에 대한 성폭력과 연관시켜 학생들 스스로 고찰할 수 있도록 도왔다”고 소개했다.

 

수업지도안은 가주한미포럼과 샌프란시스코 위안부정의연대가 공동 후원으로 제작하였고, 캘리포니아 10학년 역사/사회 교과과정 표준에 따라 만들어진 유일한 수업지도안이다.

 

또한 캐나다 브리티쉬 콜롬비아 B.C. ALPHA에서 제작한 수업지도안도 함께 제공되어 교사들이 자유롭게 참고할 수 있도록 했다. 이 웹사이트에서 제공되는 모든 수업지도안 및 참고자료는 무료로 다운로드받을 수 있다.

 

 

 

 

세명의 교육 전문가(Dr. Beverly Milner Bisland, Dr. Sunghee Shin, Dr. Jimin Kim)가 참여하여 만든 이 수업지도안은 일선 교사 및 교과과정 전문가로부터 극찬을 받고 있다.

 

샌프란시스코 통합교육구에서 31년간 일선교사, 자료교사, 부교장, 교장 등을 역임한 Lisa Shek 씨가 수업지도안을 검토한 후 “교사들이 위안부 여성에 대해 손쉽게 가르치고 배울 수 있도록 웹사이트가 설계됐다”면서 “고등학교에서 처음 위안부 역사를 접하게 되는 학생들도 도움이 될 것”이라고 기대했다.

 

위안부정의연대 공동의장을 맡고 있는 판사 출신의 Julie Tang 씨도 “위안부여성의 역사는 오늘날 인신매매(人身賣買) 여성들에 대한 강한 시사점을 던지고 있다”면서 “통합 교육과정은 전시 일본군대의 성노예제가 오늘날 우리가 세계의 다른곳에서 목도(目睹)하는 인신매매 여성들과 소녀들의 문제들을 포괄하고 있다”고 평가했다.
