일본방해 노골화..일부시의원 동요

애틀랜타 소녀상 건립에 빨간불이 켜졌다.
미남부 최초의 위안부소녀상이 건립되는 애틀랜타 브룩헤이븐 타운 시의원들이 동요(動搖) 조짐을 보이고 있다. 일본총영사관을 주축으로 일본계 주민과 극우파들이 소녀상 건립을 노골적으로 방해하는 저지활동을 벌이고 있기 때문이다.
애틀랜타 평화의 소녀상 건립 준비위원회(위원장 김백규)는 22일 한인사회에 브룩헤이븐 시의회에 소녀상 건립을 지지하는 이메일과 애틀랜타 영문 매체 웹사이트의 소녀상 관련 기사에 건립에 찬성하는 댓글을 달아 달라고 요청했다.
브룩헤이븐 시의회는 소녀상 건립을 만장일치로 결정했으나 최근 일본의 방해 책동(策動)이 극렬화하하면서 건립장소인 ‘블랙번 2’ 공원 인근 주민들이 반대 움직임을 보이고 일부 시의원도 동요하는 것으로 전해졌다.
평화의 소녀상 건립준비위는 “일본정부와 역사왜곡세력들의 집요한 로비로 인해 일부 시의원이 동요하는 불안한 상황이 벌어지고 있다”면서 “여러분의 도움이 절실하다. 브룩헤이븐 시의원들께 힘을 실어 달라”고 호소했다.
브룩헤이븐 타운은 지역 언론 기사에 달리는 댓글을 찬반으로 통계를 내고 있는 것으로 알려졌다. 한 관계자는 “한인들이 시측에 소녀상 건립 결정을 감사하는 댓글을 적극적으로 남겨 준다면 큰 도움이 될 것”이라고 당부했다.
건립준비위는 “세계여성 인권을 위해, 전시 여성에 대한 성폭력을 근절하기 위해, 할머님들의 잃어버린 인권과 명예를 되찾기 위해 용감히 한걸음 내디뎌 준 브룩헤이븐 시에 감사의 말씀을 이메일로 전해달라”며 영문 이메일 샘플을 활용해줄 것을 요청했다
평화의 소녀상 설치 결정에 지지의사를 표명하려면 자신의 이름과 거주지를 밝히고, 아래 문구를 시 이메일(mayorandcouncil@brookhavenga.gov)로 보내면 된다.

Thank you, members of City Council of Brookhaven, for standing up for human rights and women's rights.
The 'Comfort Women' issue is still so important because of the nature of the government-led system of sexual slavery, unprecedented in its scale and cruelty. Hundreds of thousands of women and young girls from more than a dozen countries were victimized against their will, and most of them died in sheer brutality.
The victims have not received an official apology or legal compensation from the perpetrator government. However, we strongly believe we must correct and remember the wrong in the past to improve our future.
Thank you again, for taking a bold step to bring awareness about the 'Comfort Women' issue to our community and educate the next generation.

I congratulate the city of Brookhaven for deciding to install a Comfort Women Memorial. The Comfort Women history is not just a Japan vs Korea issue. It is about memorializing the sexual slavery of hundreds of thousands of girls from over 13 countries during World War II. I hope the memorial will advance the fight against sex trafficking and violence against women.
