도널드 트럼프가 대통령 후보로 공식 추대(推戴)되는 공화당 전당대회 마지막 날 평범한 한인여의사가 수많은 청중 앞에서 찬조(贊助) 연설을 하게 돼 관심이 모아진다.

 

화제의 주인공은 뉴멕시코의 로스 앨러모스 출신의 리사 신 박사로 전당대회 폐막일인 21일 찬조연설자로 등장한다. 프라임타임에 찬조연설을 맡은 총 68명중 리사 신박사는 한인은 물론, 아시안으로도 유일하다.

 

공화당 전당대회는 나흘간의 일정을 서로 다른 테마로 진행되며 매일 프라임타임엔 중량감 넘치는 찬조연설자들이 잇따라 등장해 청중들의 분위기를 한껏 띄운다.

 

‘안전한 미국’을 주제로 한 첫날 릭 페리 전 텍사스 주지사와 루디 줄리아니 전 뉴욕시장, 트럼프후보 부인 멜라니아 등 26명의 찬조연설자가 등장했다. 둘째날은 ‘일하는 미국’을 주제로 폴 라이언 하원의장과 크리스 크리스티 뉴저지주지사, LPGA 베테랑 나탈리 걸비스 등이 나와 시선을 끌었다.

 

셋째날은 ‘일등 미국’을 주제로 트럼프의 경선(競選) 라이벌이었던 마르코 루비오 플로리다 상원의원과 테드 크루즈 텍사스 상원의원이 찬조연설을 했고, 마지막 연설자로 마이크 펜스 인디애나주지사가 부통령후보 수락연설을 했다.

 

‘하나되는 미국’을 주제로 한 마지막 날 최후의 연사는 전당대회의 주인공 도날드 트럼프이다. 리사 신은 가장 열기가 뜨거운 마지막 날 오클라호마 주지사 메어리 펠린에 이어 네번째 연사로 등장한다.

 

리사 신 박사는 공화당 대의원이자 ‘트럼프지지 전국 다민족 연대’ 소속으로 전당대회에 참여했다. 기라성같은 정치인들과 유명인사들 사이에 당당하게 찬조연설자가 된 그녀는 오래전부터 트럼프의 지지자로 적극적인 활동을 해온 것으로 알려졌다.

 

리사 신 박사는 20일 클리블랜드 하드락카페에서 열린 공화당 아시안 리더들의 모임에서 찬조연설 관련 질문이 나오자 “트럼프 후보와 특별한 연고(緣故)가 있는 것은 아니다. 미국이 잘 되려면 트럼프와 같은 사람이 대통령이 되야 한다는 믿음을 갖고 오래전부터 갖고 있었다”고 말했다.

 

이승래 전국공화당아시안협의회장은 “리사 신 박사가 트럼프 후보가 정치의 꿈을 구체화한 시기부터 자발적으로 블로그를 통해 지지캠페인을 펼친 것으로 알고 있다”고 전했다.

 

 

 

 

이날 공화당 아시안 리더 모임엔 두 사람외에도 미셀 박 스틸 캘리포니아 오렌지카운티 수퍼바이저, B J 박 조지아 하원의원, 영 김 새크라멘토 하원의원, 찰스 김 얼터너티브 델리게이트 등이 처음 한데 모여 트럼프 후보 당선을 위해 아시안, 특히 한인들이 긴밀한 네트워킹을 가지기로 의견을 모았다.

2016 GOP Convention Program Announced

 

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Jeff Larson, CEO of the 2016 Republican National Convention, today released an updated program for the “Make America Great Again” convention, July 18-21, in Cleveland.

These policies are crushing middle-class families, and a Hillary Clinton presidency would merely be an Obama third term that would deliver the same poor results. Donald Trump is a successful businessman with a solid record of creating jobs and the experience we need to get America’s economy up and running … and get Americans working again.

America has always been an exceptional nation. Our Founding Fathers created a system of government that has protected our liberty, allowed American ingenuity to flourish, and lifted people out of poverty by creating the conditions for opportunity and prosperity.
