아시안정치인들 스티브 하비 발언 항의

유명 흑인 코미디언이 TV쇼 프로그램에서 아시안을 비하하는 발언을 해 뉴욕의 아시안정치인들이 공식 사과를 요구하는 등 파문(波紋)이 일고 있다.
스티브 하비는 지난 13일 스티브 하비 쇼에서 ‘동양 남자가 백인 여자랑 사귀는 현실적인 가이드’라는 책을 언급하며, “어느 백인 여자가 동양인 남자를 좋아하겠냐? 백인여자에게 아시안남자를 사귈거냐고 물으면 ‘노 땡큐’ 한마디로 끝날 것”이라고 조롱(嘲弄)했다.
그는 “흑인 여자라도 마찬가지다. 발음조차 어려운 중국 음식도 먹지 않을 것”이라며 동양인 남성을 중국인으로 획일화하고 음식 문화 까지 비하하는 수준 이하의 발언을 서슴지 않았다.
이에 뉴욕주 한인정치인 론 김(김태석) 주하원의원과 여린 니오우 주하원의원, 중국계 연방하원의원 그레이스 맹, 뉴욕시의원 피터 쿠, 마가렛 친 등 5명의 아시안 정치인들은 14일 공식 성명을 통해 스티브 하비의 인종차별 발언을 비판하며 스티브 하비의 사과와 함께, 쇼 프로그램 배급사인 NBC 유니버설도 이번 사태에 책임이 있다고 비난했다.
론 김 하원의원은 “스티브 하비의 발언은 아시안아메리칸만이 아니라 여성에 대한 모욕(侮辱)이다”라고 강력 비난했다. 그레이스 맹 연방 하원의원도 “인종차별적인 농담을 일삼는 스티브 하비가 수치스럽다”고 개탄(慨歎)했다.
피터 쿠 시의원은 “우리 아시안아메리칸은 미디어의 공공연한 인종적 비하에 진력이 났다. 이들의 시대착오적인 횡포를 더 이상 묵과해서는 안된다”고 강조했다.
이들은 성명에서 “당신과 같은 유명인이 대중 앞에서 좋은 일이든 나쁜 일이든 벌이는 언행은 다른 미국인들에게 즉각적으로 영향을 미친다. 특히 아시안에 대한 부정적이고 그릇되며 잘못된 묘사는 이같은 문제를 심대하게 악화시킨다. 아시안아메리칸은 지난 수십년간 이 나라가 발전하는데 기여해 왔으며 당신의 쇼에서 부적절한 농담의 타겟이 되어서는 안된다”고 꾸짖었다.
스티브 하비는 지난 2015년 미스 유니버스 대회에 사회자로 나서, 필리핀 우승자 대신 콜롬비아 참가자를 우승자로 호명하고, 수영복 심사 당시에도 저속한 농담을 이어가 구설(慨歎)을 빚은 전력이 있다.
또, ‘백인 남자에게는 침을 뱉어도 된다’거나 백인 여자를 지칭하며 성폭력을 연상시키는 단어를 사용하는 것을 녹음한 파일이 스티브 하비쇼의 한 스탭에 의해 누출돼 논란이 되기도 했다.

NY ELECTED OFFICIALS DENOUNCE RACIST STEVE HARVEY SKIT
Members of City Council, State Assembly, and Congress Send Joint Letter Demanding Public Apology and Removal of Segment
New York, NY – Last Friday, Steve Harvey, comedian and host of the nationally syndicated Steve Harvey show, devoted a portion of his program to ridiculing little-known self-help books, including “How to Date a White Woman: A Practical Guide for Asian Men.” Mr. Harvey claimed that such a book should be only one page long, consisting of no more than “‘Excuse me, do you like Asian men?’...’No, thank you.’” He went on to assert the same for black women, stating it would be “one page too!...’You like Asian men?' 'I don’t even like Chinese food. It don’t stay with you no time…I don’t eat what I can’t pronounce.’” A link to the segment can be found here.
The segment drew immediate condemnation from community groups and online viewers, who decried its racist and sexist content. Today, Assemblyman Ron Kim, Congresswoman Grace Meng, Councilman Peter Koo, Councilwoman Margaret Chin, and Assemblywoman Yuh-line Niou have written a joint letter to the show’s producer and distributor, demanding a public apology and retraction of the clip in question. “I found Steve Harvey’s comments offensive and disappointing,” stated Assemblyman Ron Kim “Like other recent media segments mocking minorities, this clip crossed the line. It was insulting to not only Asian Americans but women of all races. We are calling on Mr. Harvey and the show’s producers to issue an official apology for this content and remove it once and for all. As fellow Americans, I believe we have an obligation to denounce prejudiced remarks and views like these whenever and wherever they appear, and thank my colleagues in government for standing together on this issue.”
Congresswoman Grace Meng stated: “Shame on Steve Harvey for making racist jokes about Asian men. Once again, a national television personality attempts to be funny at the expense of Asian Americans. His offensive and disrespectful comments are certainly not in line with NBC Universal’s stated value of “champion[ing] an inclusive culture,” and they only feed into the negative stereotypes about Asian Americans; depictions that the Asian American community continues to fight against. Steve Harvey must immediately apologize.”
Council Member Peter Koo stated: “What makes Steve Harvey’s ridiculous diatribe even worse is that NBC apparently found nothing wrong with disparaging an entire race of people. Asian Americans are sick and tired of defending themselves from this sort of public ridicule, and networks need to wake up and recognize that such bullying tactics are unacceptable.”
“Instead of making us laugh, Steve Harvey insulted Asian Americans, white women and black women in one incredibly offensive segment,” said Council Member Margaret S. Chin. “Skits like Steve Harvey's not only reinforce negative stereotypes about Asian Americans, they denigrate the contributions these hardworking Americans have made through the generations. I am proud to join my Asian American colleagues in government to denounce Steve Harvey's actions and to urge him to apologize to our community, which he has so shockingly mocked and degraded.”
Assemblywoman Yuh-Line Niou stated: “Like decent men and women everywhere, I am appalled by Steve Harvey’s statements. As public figures, our words have far greater reach and impact on public discourse. Regardless of intent, Steve Harvey’s words normalize a history of discrimination and marginalization of Asian-Americans. In these divisive times, public figures should work to bridge divides instead of diminishing the relationships we have worked so hard to build. Such stereotypes harm all of our communities and have no place in our country.”
